Stated Aims:

DRUGSCOPE IS THE UK’S LEADING CENTRE OF EXPERTISE ON DRUGS AND THE NATIONAL MEMBERSHIP ORGANISATION FOR INDIVIDUALS AND AGENCIES WORKING ACROSS THE DRUGS FIELD. WE SPEAK FOR OUR MEMBERS IN DRUG TREATMENT AND OTHER AREAS; PROVIDE QUALITY INFORMATION ABOUT DRUGS; PROMOTE EFFECTIVE RESPONSES TO DRUG USE; ADVISE ON POLICY MAKING AND GOOD PRACTICE; AND INFORM PUBLIC AWARENESS AND UNDERSTANDING.

Context

Recently seen fuelling unsubstantiated claims that Britain is experiencing a ketamine epidemic, based on a report which showed that 0.3% of 16-24 year olds had taken the drug in the last month. Also involved with a campaign to restrict the sale of painkillers.

Details

DrugScope is "the UK’s leading independent centre of information and expertise on drugs. Our aim is to inform policy development and reduce drug-related harms." It specialises in expensive research and cheap soundbites. Its recent activities include calling for an energy drink to be banned because it was called ‘Cocaine’.

Its 2007/08 accounts show a total income of £1,268,110, of which:

  • Department of Health: £230,000
  • ‘Government and EU’: £503,027
  • Total £733,027 (57.8% of all income)

It received £3,649 in donations.
