FOSTER TRUST AND CONFIDENCE IN THE INTERNET. ASSIST SERVICE PROVIDERS TO COMBAT CRIMINAL CONTENT. ASSIST LAW ENFORCEMENT IN THE FIGHT AGAINST CRIMINAL CONTENT ON THE INTERNET.

Context

The Internet Watch Foundation began with a remit of monitoring child pornography on the web but has since broadened its scope to include 'obscene' content and material that incites racial hatred. The foundation was in the news in December 2008 when it threatened to put Amazon.com on its list of "blocked sites" for selling Virgin Killer, a 1976 album by The Scorpions. It lifted its ban on the Wikipedia page about the album after the publicity led to a surge in traffic.

It is currently prosecuting Darryn Walker under the 1959 Obscene Publications Act, the first such prosecution for 20 years.

The Internet Watch Foundation was created by the Department of Trade and Industry in 1997.

Its 2007/08 accounts show a total income of £991,807, of which:
